Bebo…ummmm come again?

So while researching new social networking sites Bebo comes in the rankings of 3rd place behind Facebook and Myspace. My question was I don’t use Bebo and neither does my friends so who is?? Random I know but you know you want to know too! What I have realized after viewing this charter is that Bebo is the 3rd largest social network but still low in its numbers. It is growing very quickly and is used more often outside of the United States. So Bebo is hitting the big kid charts but not exactly ready to play.

One company that I love a lot is Google. Those that have taken classes with me hear me express my love for the company. The direction I see Google going into is what interest me. But to keep up with what is going on with Google I started reading its blogs. One interesting blog I keep up with is the Google Apps Highlights. As I explored more of some of my classmates blogs this week I cam across a blog that I feel is very important to anyone using social media sites. This blog post is by Lauren Hopkins titled Passing Employer’s “Background Check”

My mom e-mailed me this article: Employers monitor your social networking profile. More and more companies are spying on their employees as how much time they spend in the social web whether it’s on Facebook or Twitter. Companies are also watching carefully the content on their employees’ profile. This is reality, especially for students and job seekers.

Just like a portfolio or an interview, a person’s character says it all. Even though an employee might be outstanding in their career, they have to be careful on how they conduct themselves outside the professional world. For example, I am aware of what I say on Facebook , what I post, and what images are on my profile. It doesn’t make much sense for me to prepare a professional portfolio, resume, and go to various conferences to further my public relations career if my social profile content isn’t professional or appropriate to share with potential employers.

Outside of work, student organizations, and class, you still represent those organizations. What you say and post on your Facebook Profile or Twitter represents those groups as well. Companies today are realizing that. As a result, companies are taking matters into their own hands by spying on their employees using a new software called Social Sentry. Social Sentry is a software that can track a person’s social web use only on Facebook and Twitter, but will also track use on LinkedIn, YouTube, and MySpace in the future.

How does this pertain to me is what you’re asking right? Well it pertains to you in so many ways. One way is the time a person spends on Facebook by updating their status throughout the day making it seem like they do not have anything else to do besides “play” on Facebook. As a result, it doesn’t look good on the employer’s side. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to make your profile more appropriate:

if you have to question a photo, don’t upload it or tag yourself
What groups are you associated with on Facebook? Will your mom be proud of these groups?
What type of language is on your profile?
if you were asked in an interview to log into your Facebook, would you be ashamed?

You never know who’s checking your profile or using Google to search for you. Companies aren’t just using the traditional background checks. They are using the social web to their advantage to conduct their background checks as well: Will you pass the background check? If not, companies may dismiss or fire employees due to their social web profile content and behavior.

This week I want to take the time to share others blog post from my Social Media Class at Georgia Southern University. The classmate I chose this week is Ms. Jayme Stroud. She is a senior Public Relations Major. Her full blog name is Let’s Get Social. As we all know Haiti’s earthquake gave everyone an urgent call to help them. Wyclef Jean started the Yele Haiti Foundation which was started to help raise money for Haiti. Jayme explores the views the media had on this organization in Under the Microscope: The Yele Haiti Foundation:

Yele Haiti Foundation was founded by Wyclef Jean, also Haitian, to bring help and relief to other Haitian people. After the earthquakes took place in Haiti, Yele began their fund-raising efforts.You could simply text “yele” to 501501 to donate $5 by having them place the extra charge on your phone bill. After several reports saying that there was some foul play with the relief money, Jean took to Youtubeto clear up these accusations. Jean has always showed his Haitian pride, so it was no wonder that when the Haitian earthquakes happened he was the leader in the pack trying to raise funds. The foundation suffered terrible press and public relations due to these accusations. When suffering terrible press like that, it is very hard to keep up with the credibility of anything, especially a foundation where money is involved. Although it took some time, those accusations are cleared and steps have been taken to get Yele back on track. Fund raising efforts are still going on, and there are plenty of ways to continue to donate to the cause. There is still time to donate to the American Red Cross as well as Yele, so please donate.

Badges and Widgets

As I search the difference between widgets and badges, the search has the two as complimentary gadgets to each other. Like you can’t have one without the other. Some companies use the two words interchangeably. For example Twitter has a help page that teaches its users to create a widget/badge. Click here to check out the twitter feature.

I decided to explore the difference more by creating my own badge and widget. First is a screenshot of my Facebook badge.

Next I did some searching for widgets that Facebook provided and found the below image as an example. This example is from another blogger names Ryan Spoon in his blog Facebook Feed Widgets Using Widgetbox.

From my research I concluded that badges are an informational “name tag” for you to add to your websites to let people know more about how to get in contact with you and also other social media websites to find you on. A widget can be added to provide feeds from your other social media websites without the person having to navigate from the current site. Both are very similar in the nature that the information is about how to connect with the user.

PROpenMic is a social network for students, faculty, and any persons in the field of Public Relations. It offer many opportunities for those in the field to first get involved and also learn more about Public Relations. Here is a brief description of what the website has to offer.

Blogs

This section of the website is where users can explore others blogs an d learn something new! I personally read the blogs to get a feel for how people blog because I am very new at blogging. It also helps me keep up with what is going on in the PR world. Users are also able to post their own blogs here or others to read.

Forums

Here you can find posting about different opportunities in the PR community. Whether it is someone giving at advice or asking for advice, this section is open for 2-way communication.

Groups/Events

Need a place to advertise your PR event! Well PROpenMic has a section just for that to be done. You can also set up groups to interact with people of common interest or just simply for a school, group that is already well established.

Jobs/Internships

One of the most useful sections for me this year because I graduate in May and looking for a job has been my main goal this year. Under this tab you can find business opportunities that can help you find that perfect job !

Common Craft’s Plain English on Podcasting

So this video is done by Common Craft which is an organization that does short 3 minute videos on “how-to’s” of the internet. This is my second video I am sharing with you guys from them because I believe that they do a great job of breaking down information in “plain english.” In this video Podcasting is defined and also compared to Broadcasting. Next the 3 reasons pod casting became popular are explained n the video. The first is that anyone can do it. Recently for my Social Media class we were asked to record a pod casting and we were able to complete it by simply having a microphone. Next subscriptions in podcasting have also made it popular. If I want to hear radio about someone’s experience studying abroad, if they have a podcast I can subscribe to it and have it sent to my computer or mp3 player which leads to the final point. Podcast can be mobile, this means you can download them to your mobile devices. Not only ipods as state in the video but also on your mp3 players.

Rihanna and Matt Kemp…publicity stunt???

So I love Rihanna and that’s this post came about. I am so for people leaving celebrities lives to themselves but something suspicious has hit the media and it felt like it happened over night. So I was watching a local tv show and the announcer mentions the relationship between Rihanna and L.A. Dodgers Matt Kemp. So out of curiosity I Google Search the couple and naturally take a view of images. There are over 3 pages of the newly discovered couple and this is what seems unreal to me. Most celebrity couples try to keep the relationship as private as possible. But for some reason this is not the case with Rihanna and Matt. It seems like one of them is yearning for some attention how quickly this relationship became so public. Throughout the pictures you see the couple at various public events like basketball games and museum visits.

The pictures also look ver staged. They look more like a married couple as opposed to one that could only be dating for less than a year. Another thing is I never heard of Matt Kemp before this new relationship. I am very much not questioning the actual relationship being legit. But I am looking more at who is trying to get this new attention and why?
